Prison release assistance in Austria: housing, work and documents before release

§ 150 StVG is a practical support rule. If a prisoner cannot reasonably pay the travel costs to the future place of stay, a ticket can be arranged and, in some cases, travel provisions can be provided. It is not a full social benefit package.

That distinction matters. Housing, employment, insurance, medical care and family support must still be prepared, evidenced and coordinated with the relevant offices.

A useful release file includes identity documents, a contact address, authority for relatives, health records, detention confirmation, job confirmation and an appointment list. Not every document is legally required in every case, but each can close a practical gap.

The order matters. First clarify where the person will go. Then deal with appointments, mail, insurance, work and medical care. If conditional release or a condition is in play, the documents must also fit the court file.

Relatives can help by building a simple list: housing, mail, phone, identity papers, medical records, work, appointments, debts and pending procedures. Each item should name who is responsible and what proof exists.

Avoid promises that cannot later be kept. A concrete housing confirmation is stronger than a vague oral possibility. A job lead with no contact person is weak. The more precise the evidence, the easier release preparation becomes.
